It seems like everybody wants to get into social media marketing, but very people actually get it. Inspired by my trip to the Black Enterprise Women of Power Summit, I decided to create this video for those in my circle who are interested in social media, want to get into it because its very popular, but don't really understand the value of spaces like twitter, facebook, and youtube.

Documenting my amazing BE trip, I go through the different ways I was able to easily use social media portals as real-time marketing, conversation, business branding, credibility building, client retention, new client attraction spaces. While I know that sounds like a mouthful, this is in a nutshell exactly what you want to do and I'm hoping in this video I can shed light on how you get it done.

To some degree I do get into practical things that I do on social media, which you can do to promote your business and build your personal brand. Launched in 2011, NationalBlackPages.com is an online black business directory. The goal of the National Black Pages is to assist African American business owners in advertising their businesses and websites.

As I mentioned in my previous post, SEO Tips: Submitting Your Site to Niche Directories, adding your website information to online directories that target your audience is an easy way to improve your presence on google and drive traffic back to your website.

One of the women currently taking my Sistas Who Sell 7 Day Challenge, noted that when doing a search for her website the first link to come up was actually not her site, but a directory she was listed on. Directories and sites that are older or more established than your own may often times show up first in search engine queries, which is why you want to make sure even when you are not at the top of the search list you are visible on the sites that come up first.

Right now I have Social Networking / Social Media Marketing ALL Over my brain. While I normally limit myself to only 3 web projects a month, right now I am working on 4 custom ning network projects and 2 wordpress blog projects + redesigning my black parenting + along with maintaining my current 3 ning networks. I am 'work at home' working hard right now!

I just had an amazing radio interview with, Deborah Owens Finance Guru and Host of Wealthy Lifestyle Radio (replay below). Next week I am off to social network at Blogalicous Weekend 2010 and THEN two weeks later I will be speaking about Social Networking Essentials at the Extreme Makeover for the Woman Summit & Benefit.

Some how I've also managed to host a boat load of giveaways this week (see one, two, three), take my son to Toys R Us for Geoffry's 49th birthday party last week (adding pics to my facebook page soon) And in an hour from now we are going to the NC Seafood festival today after a day of fun yesterday! When next month hits, I think you'll have to stick a fork in ME instead of the turkey.

Is it hard to find black products online?

A few days ago on my Black Parenting Blog (and sistasense too) I decided to post: 'DailyClick Mommy Picks: Dolls Like Me + 4 Black Parenting Friendly Websites.' The idea behind the post was to share a few quality black websites for moms, mommy bloggers, and dads too. Well, I noticed someone left a comment yesterday that really got me thinking. She said:

I have to check this out (dollslikeme.com). My middle daughter is dark brown and I've been bothered by the white dolls their father has for them at his house. Even with my oldest daughter, who was very light at that age, I preferred to give her toys that she could relate too. My middle daughter has even said she prefers the long straight hair as opposed to her hair being curly. It's extremely long, but she'd rather wear it straight. Anyway, I hope I can impart on her (and her other two siblings) the same messages that I was able to with her older sister. -Petula

Her comment reminded me of how many times African American moms and dads online have visited my Mahogany Momma website and asked me where to find dolls, party favors, toys, books and videos that their children, black children could relate to because even with the Wallmarts, Toys R Us, and Barnes and Nobles of the world many black parents (parents of children in color in general) still find in difficult in their day to day lives to find products worth buying for their children and for themselves.

We still have some fighting to do as far as getting some more real visibility in the mainstream world BUT there are some good things that I'm seeing right now. There are people like myself who rather than wait for folks to figure out that black consumers and black business owners need more attention, they are doing something about it. For starters, I hope you have heard about the Anderson Family and their Experiment to only buy black for one year. They have been seen on television several times and I posted one of their interviews on my website: The Empowerment Experiment. Their story shows that more of us have to make an effort to go against the grain and support black business owners because that is how we are going to build up our communities. Don't believe the hype, when folks say it doesn't matter. Every other cultural/ethnic community, Spanish, Chinese, Italian, Jewish communities, invest in their families and their people, and we have to start doing the same as well.

I personally have 30 plus black websites, because I feel compelled to make the changes that I want to see. Over the years I've built spaces like FindBlackProducts.com, The Search Urban Directory, and The Black Girl Click Ad Network specifically to address these issues. I'll be honest with you, when I do hear from big companies who want to connect with African American viewers online they usually aren't looking to invest in my projects through sponsorships or advertising. Most of the time I am targeted by their PR companies looking for free reviews and plugs, which works well for them (because they get paid, and their big company clients get publicity) BUT that stuff doesn't help me be able to afford to invest my websites like I would want to. BUT what keeps me motivated and consistent is that I am able to work with black business owners and entrepreneurs who want to promote themselves on these spaces and in turn I'm able to give you and other online viewers an opportunity to see what great black products and services we do have with/or without mainstream publicity. So for myself I've learned to build my business by working with other black entrepreneurs and without depending on sponsors or grants, which I think is something a lot of us are going to have to learn how to do if we want to get these things done on our own.

Perfect personal example of this, when I had my son, all I knew about with respect to hair care products for black children was "Just for Me", "Dax", or "Baby Oil" (lol). Even with searching, I had to settle for finding a few natural oils to use on his hair and not dry it out with baby oil, because that is a big mistake but when you don't no better you can't do better (right?). So, this past month, a new member joined my social network "Black Business Women Online" (mybbwo.com) and her name is Landra Booker Johnson, the creator of Cara B Naturally (mycarab.com), an all natural hair care line for black children. And she created it because she needed something like that for her child, again being the change we seek! Now if I hadn't been frustrated about not being able to find black business women online and created BBWO, I might have not found Cara B and this is exactly why its so important for us to be the change we seek!

I recently teamed up with Kimberly Allers Seals from MochaManual.com. She told me about a company that was looking for the input of African American moms online to put in a new collection of greeting products for our market in exchange for the chance to win a $50 gift certificate. As soon as I got her email I jumped at the chance to help, because I first and foremost love when we sisters can work together (I've had my share of horror stories) and guess what! The moms shared their input, all went well and one of the moms in my Black Moms Club Social Network won the gift certificate! Woo Hoo!

Right now I am pushing for black women to support our fellow business sista, Sadia Sinsay and complete her survey about Black Women and underwear. She noticed that its difficult to find underwear in skin tones for women of color and she is working on making that change BUT needs you all to share your experiences in the two minute survey. Deanna Sutton, creator of Clutch Magazine has recently proposed a panel discussion at the major media, technology conference SXSW entitled the Elevation of Black Women in New Media, so that we can come together and us black women who are doing well creating spaces online can share our advice and words of wisdom with other black women bloggers and entrepreneurs online. But in order for her to get this panel passed you guys have to vote for it and share it with the women in your circle.

To answer the question I started with, yes, it is hard to find black products because everybody thinks we don't want them or we are not looking BUT we are. Have you seen how much attention my friends Lamar and Ronnie Tyler are getting over at BlackAndMarriedWithKids for their new movie 'You Saved Me', a documentary on married black couples? While the mainstream thinks its buzzworthy to JUST focus on single, black women in the corporate world with no man, the Tylers thought it was time to talk about our Real Men and Women who are getting married and can teach many of us what real black relationships SHOULD look like. Truth be told, we have individuals in our local communities who want to break it down like Dr. Phil, who want to put us in the picture like Tyler Perry, and tell us to 'Hug and Love ourselves' like Monique. We just have to find them and in some cases become them if we truly want to see the change that we seek.

I was on twitter today and happened to see this tweet: @ClutchMagazine founder @dedej has a panel pitch for @SXSW called "The Elevation of Blk Women in New Media-Vote Now! http://bit.ly/abeE5L

I was introduced to SXSW this year. It is this MAJOR Music, film, and interactive conference and festival that all the techies go to for networking, scoping out the new new, etc. Well this year they had the 1st Black Blogging Rockstars Panel (watch video) with some of the top black bloggers and tech heads. Deanna, founder of ClutchMagazine and also listed on the BBWO50 Top Women Entrepreneurs on the Network, was a speaker on the Black Bloggers panel and for SXSW 2011 she is pitching a new panel discussion: The Elevation of Black Women in New Media, to focus on issues related to black women entrepreneurs and black women bloggers online.

I immediately clicked to read all about her idea and of course vote for this panel. I then sent Deanna a quick tweet showing my support and to my surprise she told me that she'd like to have me on the panel! Seeing it happen would be awesome, possible being a speaker, would be even better! But we'll see how things go if I officially get on the panel, for now I would just like you to find out more about her idea and vote for this discussion. The black blogging community has been talking about our issues not just as bloggers, but as entrepreneurs pushing to work amongst ourselves and gain credibility among mainstream advertisers and I think its high time we take this conversation to another level. On Black Web2.0 there as the post about African American mom bloggers finally getting their just due, myself and some wonderful mommy bloggers took part in the Magical Mocha Moms Mixer sponsored by Disney for Mommy Bloggers of Color, there was an article on BlogHer about African American Women Online seeking online networks and recently the Grio sparked discussion on the state of black women in the blogosphere.

Clearly folks are talking, its time for more of us to join the conversation. I hope you'll take a few minutes to vote for Deana's idea and if it all works out, perhaps more of us will be attending SXSW2011 and showcasing our contributions as the Black Social Media Community of today.

I've been quite busy this week, working on Banner Designs for new customers, launching my new blog iWatchBlackMovies.com and updating Black Business Women Online. BBWO is almost 10,000 members, so you know me .... I always have to make the network better. While alot of our members choose to pay for advertising on the network, I know that some folks are on a tight budget plus there are quite a few sites that I just like and want to share SO I came up with the BBWO DAILYCLICK. Every day, my hubby and I will showcase two websites by Black Business Women.

Searching for Black Business Owners: Free Marketing on Social Network ... Almost 10,000 members

As of March 2010, Black Business Women Online, the social network for women entrepreneurs of color has 7,649 business-minded members. It is my mission to continue to make this space better, so I am currently searching for black business owners interested in promoting their businesses online.

Beyond being a free network, one of the perks of being a BBWO member is that you have your own business blog where you can post your website information, sales, business updates, marketing tips, recommended resources and small business news relevant to the Black Business Women Online Community.

For the past few weeks, there has been an increased effort to daily search BBWO Blogs and highlight the best posts relevant to the Black Business Community Online. How to Drive Traffic and Customers to Your Website

Stop me, if this story isn’t your story. You’re an internet entrepreneur. You’ve got a business and a website, but no customers. You know about submitting to search engines and you’ve tried a few link exchanges, but still you don’t have any customers. You hear people talking about blogging and social networking which all sounds great, but you’re not quite clear on when all the blogging and networking helps you get customers. At the end of the day, you clearly know that business isn’t business without customers, but you just don’t understand how to drive traffic and customers to your website.

I’m a visual learner, so hopefully my explanation works for you. Think of yourself (the entrepreneur) as an actor. Your website is your stage and your business is your play. You know you’ve created a masterpiece, but nobody else knows because you don’t have an audience. Every time you sit in front of your computer, you need to be thinking about how you can create an audience around your business filled with curious browsers and potential buyers. Your goal is simple and so is this point; if you can’t attract an audience online, you won’t have customers online.

The easiest ways to drive traffic and customers to your website are as follows:

Search Engine Optimization: If people can’t find you online, you won’t get traffic. Optimizing your website for search engines is one of the cheapest and easiest ways to build your business’ online presence.

Buzz Building: Right now no one knows you online and that’s your biggest problem. SEO is important, but you can’t just sit back and hope the search engines will do all the work. You have to create a marketing plan to promote yourself and your business. Furthermore, the more you promote yourself and build external links to your website, the better your rankings will become in search engines.

List Building: Every business starts off small. Even when you are only getting a small amount of traffic or a handful of customers, you need to get into the habit of tracking that traffic and your current list of customers. Don’t make the mistake of focusing only on attracting new customers. Your business won’t grow overnight, but it will grow overtime if you learn how to consistently build a list of existing customers, new customers, and business associates.

Last but not least, don’t make the mistake of wishing for a magical marketing moment. Even if you’re lucky enough to get a business grant or spotlight promotion from a big name celebrity, you still have to figure out how to use that money and/or publicity to attract customers to your business. If you learn how to find customers online, I guarantee you that more customers will start to find you.

Finding Black Businesses Online

Believe it or not, I’ve spent a good portion of the last ten years searching for Black Businesses Online. I like convenience as much as the next shopper, but it’s almost impossible to shop conveniently when trying to support other black owned businesses. I’m sure you know what I mean. It’s ten times easier to simply go to your local Walmart or Target for just about everything, than it is to find local black products and black business owners to support.

Finding Black Businesses isn’t always easy, but it’s a challenge worth undertaking. Being a black entrepreneur, I feel it’s important to support other black businesses as much as I expect others to support me. Long story short, among the many things that I do online, I maintain the Search Urban Directory, which is in my opinion one of the biggest and most comprehensive online directories of black businesses and black websites.

I’m always impressed by the new and exciting minority owned businesses that are submitted to the Search Urban Directory on a weekly basis. Contrary to popular belief, we do have an ever growing number of black inventors and innovators creating products and services designed to make our lives better. If I can support them simply by maintaining this directory, I know that I’m making it a little easier and a little more convenient for other black consumers to commit to buying black online and in their local communities.

Top Free Web Tools for Entrepreneurs

As an entrepreneur on a small budget, I like to pocket my profit and avoid spending whenever possible. In today's economy, you can't afford to waste your money. Check out my listing of the top FREE and affordable web tools for Entrepreneurs and Small Business Owners. Feel free to add your freebies to the list and/or share this list with others.

1. The best free web tool for every entrepreneur is of course paypal.com. I use paypal for everything; sending out invoices, setting up subscription payments, and creating shopping carts.

2. My cell phone is my primary line and that simply won't do as an entrepreneur. I spend little to nothing to make international calls on Skype and I host all my teleseminars, conference calls, and virtual meetings for Free using FreeConferenceCall.

3. Adding Video or Audio to your site doesn't have to cost you a thing! If you can't afford Go-to-Meeting, use UStream for live video streaming, it's free! PC Users take advantage of your free Movie Maker to create your own movies. For audio, download audacity, a free audio recorder. It's great for podcasting. I host my podcast on podbean for less than $5 a month, and I make money by adding a subscription fee to my premium podbean posts. In my podcast I share my e-business tips with other entrepreneurs.

4. I self publish all my books at no cost on lulu.com and use Kunaki to mass produce my CDs.

5. There is no better Free email service than g-mail. Google has tons of free small business solutions, from google analytics to Google Docs for word processing applications, which are great if you don't have MS Word or MS Office.

6. Do you want to keep track of your website and marketing campaigns. Use google analytics to track your stats. Signup for Google Alerts and create alterts on your name, website, or business to receive free email notifactions of any weblinks relevant to you. When creating a new alert, remember to put phrases and names in quotations. Try Google's free keyword tool if you need help with selecting keywords for your ads or SEO campaigns.

7. If you are looking for free software visit Download.com or the FreeSite.

8. You can try eFax for online faxing services. When I don't feel like paying for faxes, I simply scan my document and send via email as a pdf. Get's the job done without the extra hassle.

9. If you are looking for freelance work or a freelancer for your project, visit elance.com to promote your business or find inexpensive services.

13. Blogging is so important for my business. I get tons of Free Advice on Blogging from ProBlogger Darren Rowse, and Yaro Starak. Yaro even has FREE How-to-Blog video tutorials to help you build your first blog.

14. No Cost Marketing is my favorite kind of marketing. I promote my site for free online in tons of different ways. I created my own social networks for FREE on ning.com. I use free social bookmarking and networking sites like stumbleupon.com and twitter to share my posts with other entrepreneurs. With thousands of friends on Myspace and Ning, I hardly ever pay for advertising.

15. When I am not on my Ning website, I am networking with people on yahoo groups and meetup.com.

16. For Creating a Blog, there is no better Free Blog Publishing Tool than Wordpress. Here is a listing of over 45 Free premium word press themes.

17. Send out your press releases using PRLeap and PRWeb.

18. The best free websites to host your videos are of course youtube.com and blip.tv.

20. For the most affordable web hosting plans and domain name registration I suggest godaddy.com and hostmonster.com.

Do you have One Too Many Business Ventures?

I just read this great post on the Black Business Women Online group: 'Are you spreading yourself too thin' by Cleo Anderson. Cleo wanted to know if having multiple businesses or websites was a good idea or if it was better to focus on growing one business and making it the best. As someone who is often asked why I have so many websites, I just had to respond to this post.

My response:

I truly believe that it depends on the person. Although many business people big and small have more than one business. You can look at a person like Beyonce Knowles (a singer, actress, owner of a clothing line). You can look at a company like google, more than just a search engine, every year they expand and purchase over companies and adding services like blogger, video, and checkout to their business, which makes them bigger and have more market value. Even amazon.com now has video downloading services to compete with sites like itunes and youtube.

On a smaller scale, in conversations with several entrepreneurs, I've had many of them tell me that - though it is hard work - they think it's important to invest in different business, so that you have multiple sources of income. I know one woman who owns a group home for the elderly, has a real estate company, and a music store.

I will say that there is a great deal to gain from putting all your focus and energy into one particular site and/or business. You can give it all your attention, and devote extra time to devising new strategies to either connect to new customers or develop better services for existing clients. But keep in mind that at some point, many businesses aspire to grow and expand. Whether their goal is to increase capital or compete with competition, sometimes change is a good thing.

I will say from personal experience as a Black Woman Entrepreneur, both myself and many other black women around me tend to gravitate towards multiple businesses not just to diversify/increase income, but in an effort to really actualize our personal calling and make a difference in the world. Seven years ago when I started my first site, msoyonline.com I wasn't interested in making a business. I wanted to create a website for young girls of color, because I was inspired by animated African American Cartoon, Hey Monie!, and thought to showcase a zine promoting positive Black Content for girls. As the years past msoy expanded into a Black Search Engine, and as my web skills improved I started Urban Dynamics Black Business Web Tools. Then I had my son and expanded to Black Moms Club. Before I knew it I was regularly selling ad space for those interested in marketing on msoy and creating my own publications until I had my present, modest network, still in the making.

For me, expansion was a natural learning progression. And though it may seem like a bit much, I've been able to maintain all these sites because ultimately they all fall under the umbrella of the msoy network, and each is really just a building block of the others. Rather than simultaneously starting 6 projects, I think its important to develop a strong foundation on which to build and grow. Though I must confess, one of the biggest drawbacks that I face, as do many black women entrepreneurs, is trying to do it on our own. Which admittedly comes from not seeking out outside funding as much as our white female couterparts. And this does inturn mean that many times I, like many of my sistas, stretch ourselves WAY too thing. But I have taken that to be just another piece of my puzzle.

Though I can't speak for other netpreneurs of color, my goal is to develop a strong, diverse network of quality Black Sites on which to promote Black Businesses and tap into an under served market of African American Online Viewers interested in products, Ads, and content in general with images relevant to us. Its great to have the BETs, Black Voices, and such, but I don't plan to limit myself to accepting the current market as it excludes me and mine to a large degree, which is why I intend on expanding and perfecting what I do.

So long story short, there are some who should definitely focus on one business and perfect it. There are others that should diversify, and expand it! Either way, make it your own, make it positive, and contribute something worth while to the Black Community at large.

Internet Marking : An Easy Way to Build Your Network

One of the best things you can do as an entrepreneur is to regularly take the time to assess your business practices. Sit down, think about your regular routine and make note of what is working and what is not.

For a long time, when my internet sales got low I found myself desperately looking for ways to generate more traffic? I put all my time and energy into trying new marketing strategies, until I realized that the key is not just generating new traffic, you have to take the time to work with the traffic / customers / readers / etc. that you already have.

I quickly realized that putting 100% of my time into internet marketing meant I was spending 0% of my time regularly connecting with my current network. To correct this error I started to:

Respond faster to emails : Getting back to inquiries and or customer emails quickly, is good business practice.
Send out more promotional messages and or informative articles to regular readers and customers. I realized that by focusing on new traffic, I was regularly losing old traffic from readers due to lack of attention or follow up. This means that gaining new readers and losing old ones meant no real growth as far as reaching my goal to expand me Business groups, Customer Base, and social circles.
I took a close look at my different websites and realized there were not enough cross promotional links. I spent so much time promoting on other sites, I didn't realize I wasn't taking full advantage of cross promoting my work on my own sites!
I began to really follow up with site owners interested in cross promotion, collaboration, prize giveaways, interviews, etc. Every potential promotional opportunity you let pass is one lost opportunity to strengthen a network and expand your business presence.

In short, once I stopped looking outward, and started to build from the foundation I already created my social networks and websites really started to grow! Remember sometimes its not quantity, but quality that counts. Go through your old emails, review some of your regular webspots, and think about how you can really tap into your resources and make the most of what you already have.

Increasing Your Holiday Web Sales

It goes without saying that the holiday season is a great time to boost your holiday sales. Everyone is online shopping taking advantage of the sales and free shipping; spending money that all us entrepreneurs are dieing to make! Given the fact that this is a great time to profit from your online business, I've been writing quite a few black business posts about internet marketing and generating more traffic to your site. And among the feedback I've been getting one fellow entrepreneur made a great point, she basically said that "It's not the traffic I'm focused on, it's turning those clicks into cash."

Beyond getting more online visitors to your site, I'm sure you too are more concerned with making sales. You and me both. Making Friends on Myspace

It's no secret that all the hopeful entrepreneurs have flocked to myspace looking for a new audience, new customers, big networks and lots of money. Everyone logs on and sets up a profile, believing that if they build it the friends will come and THEN most sadly realize that that they don't have as many friends as they want and that they quite seem to understand how a site so simple to setup is so difficult to promote on.

First off you need to realize that myspace is full of people just like you, and we are all trying to network our way to the top so in order to get noticed on myspace you have got to stand out. Before I get to the nuts and bolts of how to stand out on myspace and gain more friends, let me first tell you why I think this whole process is important.

As a Black Entrepreneur with limited start up money I've been trying to map Low Budget Marketing down to a science because quite frankly I am more interested in making money than spending what little I have. That being said, Myspace is one of those social networks that - if used properly, can help increase your web visibility without you having to spend a dime. Nice idea right. Of course most people understand this concept, they just don't get how it translates into putting up a profile and adding a bunch of friends you've never met.

Ok, so let me explain that part from a personal perspective. My flagship myspace page, Sistas Making Money has almost 3,000 friends, which is an impressive size friend list to some and practically minuscule to others. Either way, it is a community that I built filled with businesses, entrepreneurs, and women who are interested in my products, articles and services. Every time I create a blog post, add a new friend or post a bulletin, I am connecting to thousands of potential viewers and customers in a matters of clicks and minutes. Creating this page has allowed me to not only share my work with others, but find out about some very interesting Black Businesses and entrepreneurs, many of which I would not have discovered on my own, or even through Google.

So in a nutshell that is why I created my page, and how I use myspace to share and network with others. Let me now tell you how I did it so that you can work on building your myspace friend list and making the most of your profile.

After researching myspace marketing (I'm a research fanatic, you should be too), I realized that I was going to have to develop a myspace marketing strategy if I wanted to be seen, so I did the following:

Tried to Pick a Name that was Catchy and Relevant to what I wanted to promote. My focus was Black Business Women so I decided to go with Sistas Making Money, because every body wants to make money so the chances of people clicking on my profile to see what it was about what high.
You also want to make sure you set an eye catching profile image. Folks love the Sistas Making Money logo, it stands out. In a sea of myspace profiles, you want to up your chances of being noticed in a crowd.
Two things I personally avoid in my design are embedding music, if I am not a musician and using background images that make it hard to read my profile text. Sometimes too much flash makes viewers run fast. I personally like adding friends with cool but simple layouts, clear links to their website, great product photos, and interesting blogs.
My most important criteria for adding friends is whether or not they meet my target audience. I don't believe in adding every person that sends you a friend request just to up your numbers because at the end of the day when I am sending out blog posts and bulletins I want to know that my list is largely comprised of people who are interested in what I have to say, rather than myspace fantatics looking to up their friend count. Don't get me wrong, I make it a point to add a few random friends every now and again, but 90% of my Sistas Making Money friend circle is comprised of Professional, Innovative Black Women entrepreneurs. I like it that way, and keeping it that way also helps the friends in my circle easily navigate my friend list and find interesting people to add to their circle.
Which brings me to my BIG point about making new friends on myspace. For at least the first month that I created Sistas Making Money I spent at least three hours a week looking for friends and manually adding them to my list. This amounted to only a few hundred friends but the end result was a list that quickly started to build itself. Once you pass the 500 mark by manually adding friends and accepting friend requests as they come in, you will start to find that more people are requesting your friendship which means less work for you.
Again, I want to emphasize that I tried to make friends with folks most relevant to my business and pro Black Women Initiatives. But I didn't try to exclusively link to big profile sites because chances are you won't initially be in their top friend list on their profile page, which means unless you are constantly adding comments to their page (a good way to promote yourself but lots of manual work), you won't get seen on big profile pages so they won't really help build your visibility. In addition to a few high profile pages, mix it up with folks with medium size friend lists, your closest of close friends, and friends with no friend circle at all. It really helps to be in the top listing of a persons profile, because chances are when someone comes to their page to either comment or to find new friends, they are going to click on the pages of the first friends they see.
As I mentioned above commenting is also alot of work, but its a great way to show your friends some love and promote yourself at the same time.

The Secret to Creating Your Own e-books

I love writing, and when I discovered that I could turn my personal howtos into e-books everyone could enjoy, I went nuts! If you want to create your own e-book or if you are interested in why they are becoming so popular, let me fill you in on my e-book howto success.

First and foremost, creating e-books is are great for several reasons:

Sharing Your Knowledge, Skill Set, or Experience with Others
Generating Extra Income
Generating Traffic to Your site
Marketing Your Product or Service
Building a Network of Interested Readers

I create my e-books for these and other reasons. My first collection, Mahogany Momma eGuides, is special to me because it allows me to share my advice and resources with other African American mothers. It also always me to have total control over creating a Mommy Magazine that fits my interests and reader circle. In addition to Mahogany Momma, I also have a series of Black Business eBooks available on Urban Dynamics: The Web Resources for Black Busiess Owners and Entrepreneurs. I've created over 10 African American e-Books this year, and I'm looking forward to working on the next one.

Now Down to the HowTo Part

Pick a topic of interest to you that you know you can research and successfully write about
Create an Outline of Your eBook, separate your points into chapters and focus on finishing one chapter at a time. Breaking up your text into smaller parts makes it easier to write about
Do your research, write, edit, repeat (continue this process until you create something that's professional, quality, and what you envision it to be)
Now I'm an MS Word fanatic but if you do not have access to word another processing program to take advantage of is Google Docs and SpreadSheets, this is Free Online Software and great for creating documents
If you are trying to creating an e-book with special features like embedded tables, a calender, etc., take a look at the free downloadable templates that Microsoft Office provides.
Once you have created your e-book you will need to design a book cover. Now here is my biggest of secrets.... I use istockphoto.com for great high quality African American images, Black clipart, and stock photography. You can get an istock image for between $1 and $5. It's so cheap and the quality is so great, if you didn't know this is one of the best kept net secrets there is.
Now open your grapics program and design that cover! Or pay someone to do it for you.
After the book and the cover is done, convert your e-Book into .pdf form. I use the software: pdf995, it works and its free.
The best place to sell your e-book is Payloadz.com, this site provides free and affordable services for those who want to sell downloads like e-books or software. You can even create your own affiliate program to boost traffic and generate more revenue.
When I go to events like Black Expos or Book Fairs, my e-Books provide great merchandise for extra sales and also promotional giveaways or trades. Now you are probably wondering how I promote my e-books offline. I burn them onto cds! You can by a pack of 100 cds and cases and sell your e-book cds for as much as you like. And if you want to go for a more professional look, sometimes I get my CDs professionally printed by Kunaki.com. Again, this is another great, cheap site to take use of. It is even a great resource for those who want to put their songs or movies on cd or dvd.

Here is something else I found helpful

1. Create the best content you can with the best products you can possibly offer. Your content is your best advertisement - if visitors love your content, then they will go back and spread the word to others.

2. Make it easy for users to recommend your site. Viral marketing is very important -- and easy to tap on the Web. But give your users the tools. Get a Recommend this Site script from websites such as cgiscripts.com and similar directories of scripts. Some even go as far as giving incentives to those who recommend the site to their friends. If only 10 people go to your site, but these 10 people invite 10 more - that's additional traffic that you get for FREE!

3. Rank well in the search engines (organic search results, not the pay per click). SEs can be a big source of traffic. The key is to create the best content in your niche. If you have good content, other websites will gladly link to you and offer your site as a resource to their audience. Check the on-page factors and be sure to get linked from authority sites in your topic area.

4. Send out press releases. While outfits charge as much as $650 per release, there are free press release submission places on the Web. Press releases allow you to (a) attract media attention; (b) get more back links to your website without sending each website an email request; and (c) get more visibility especially if your press release gets in Google News or Yahoo News. You can send your press release via our Press Release Submission Form

5. Submit articles. Write articles and submit them to websites accepting author submissions. You get exposure for your business; establishes you as an authority in your field, and allows you to get back links for your website. If 50 websites publish your article and it contains a link back to your website, then you easily get 50 links from a single article. The more links you have, the greater your chances for increasing your search engine rankings.

6. Improve your conversion. Getting visitors is one thing; getting them to buy your products is a whole different story. Read the article "10 Ways to Convert Visitors to Buyers" for tips on how to improve your conversion rates.

7. Syndicate your content. You can auto-pilot your marketing and attract visitors every time you update your content via RSS feeds. Or if you have a blog, you can use it to draw customers repeatedly to your website. Black Websites: Generating more online traffic

Lately I've come across quite a few online entrepeneurs with good business ideas, and great sites, but no clue how to generate web traffic. This is something that even the most web savy business owners are always trying to improve, so I figured I would focus on this topic for a few days.

For any and every newbie out there, when you seriously want to generate more site traffic the first thing you have to do is research! Sounds simple I know, but the question is research what? Well, you need to define your target audience and find out what sites the like as well as what content those sites generally carry.

I'm in the business of creating black websites, so while doing my own research I thought it was a good idea to create a list of some of the most traffic heavy black sites online. If you have a large African American target audience as well, this is definitely a list that you want to check out.

You also want to start visiting websites and forum where fellow web entrepreneurs frequent. I encourage many of my fellow Black Business Women to connect with me though my Sistas Making Money on myspace page or popular forums like izania and connecting black. One imporant part of generating traffic is creating business alliances, these are the people who can give you that free -priceless advice we are always looking for and also potentially provide you with free or lowcost ad space (provided their website attracts the type of people you want to market to). For example my site, Sistapreneurs Network attracts professional black women, so I tend to work with advertisers who want to reach this audience.

You always have to remember that banner advertising isn't just about putting up banners. If you buy ad space on a site that doesn't attract your niche group, then you are wasting your money.

Also, remember that one of the most important traffic builders is search engine optimization. Make sure you have the right keywords listed on your site. If you need help, go to a keyword search tool like: http://www.digitalpoint.com/tools/suggestion or try google suggestions (http://www.google.com/webhp?hl=en&complete=1). In conjunction with having the right keywords you have to have a google site map. The easier it is for google to search your site, the better chances you have of your pages being indexed in the search engine.

So if your ready to start generating more traffic then go check out your competitor pages, put together a strong list of keywords, and advertise on sites that reach your audience.

I really like niche marketing on yahoo groups, I've found some of my best Black Networking / Biz Women / WAHM circles on yahoo. AND YOU DON'T HAVE TO DEAL WITH A TON OF EMAILS IF YOU DO'NT WANT TO... I get my favorite groups sent to my inbox, and for the rest I opt to read them only online, which is a great feature because practically ever day I'm going online looking at my yahoo groups and checking for the messages most relevant to me. I don't usually focus on the number of members, though its nice to be in a group of 500+ members, its also nice to be in smaller groups where you can make stronger connects.

iStock photo is a great resource for web site developers, graphic designers, self publishers, marketing agents .... just about anybody looking for some quality photography should go to istockphoto.com.

For web masters of color istockphoto.com is a dream come true, because you can find affordable, quality photography, and clipart that reflect African American, Asian, and Hispanic culture. When I say it's affordable I mean it. Unlike other stock shops online, you will pay between $1 and $5 per image or flash content. It doesn't get much cheaper than that!

I've used istock photos to create magazine covers, book covers, and to add an extra something to my websites. When your own digital photos don't cut it, and your looking for more quality clipart than a regular old search engine can give, I would definitely recommend going to istockphoto.

Not only can you find great images, you can also earn revenue by submitting your own photos to istock. Just be advised that there is an online exam you must take and you must be able to create quality commercial images / photography. iStock isn't in the business of taking unprofessional work, so if you are not a great artist this isn't the right program for you. With free membership, low-cost graphics, and opportunity to make money, istockphoto.com is truly a dream come true.

The reason why you aren't a millionaire (or on your way to becoming one) is really quite simple. You probably assume it's because you aren't earning enough money, but the truth is that for most people, whether or not you become a millionaire has very little to do with the amount of money you make. It's the way that you treat money in your daily life.
Here are 10 possible reasons you aren't a millionaire:

1. You Care What Your Neighbors Think: If you're competing against them and their material possessions, you're wasting your hard-earned money on toys to impress them instead of building your wealth.

2. You Aren't Patient: Until the era of credit cards, it was difficult to spend more than you had. That is not the case today. If you have credit card debt because you couldn't wait until you had enough money to purchase something in cash, you are making others wealthy while keeping yourself in debt.

3. You Have Bad Habits: Whether it's smoking, drinking, gambling or some other bad habit, the habit is using up a lot of money that could go toward building wealth. Most people don't realize that the cost of their bad habits extends far beyond the immediate cost. Take smoking, for example: It costs a lot more than the pack of cigarettes purchased. It also negatively affects your wealth in the form of higher insurance rates and decreased value of your home.

4. You Have No Goals: It's difficult to build wealth if you haven't taken the time to know what you want. If you haven't set wealth goals, you aren't likely to attain them. You need to do more than state, "I want to be a millionaire." You need to take the time to set saving and investing goals on a yearly basis and come up with a plan for how to achieve those goals.

5. You Haven't Prepared: Bad things happen to the best of people from time to time, and if you haven't prepared for such a thing to happen to you through insurance, any wealth that you might have built can be gone in an instant.

6. You Try to Make a Quick Buck: For the vast majority of us, wealth doesn't come instantly. You may believe that people winning the lottery are a dime a dozen, but the truth is you're far more likely to get struck by lightning than win the lottery. This desire to get rich quickly likely extends into the way you invest, with similar results.

7. You Rely on Others to Take Care of Your Money: You believe that others have more knowledge about money matters, and you rely exclusively on their judgment when deciding where you should invest your money. Unfortunately, most people want to make money themselves, and this is their primary objective when they tell you how to invest your money. Listen to other people's advice to get new ideas, but in the end you should know enough to make your own investing decisions.

8. You Invest in Things You Don't Understand: Your hear that Bob has made a lot of money doing it, and you want to get in on the gravy train. If Bob really did make money, he did so because he understood how the investment worked. Throwing in your money because someone else has made money without fully understanding how the investment works will keep you from being wealthy.

9. You're Financially Afraid: You are so scared of risk that you keep all your money in a savings account that is actually losing money when inflation is put into the equation, yet you refuse to move it to a place where higher rates of return are possible because you're afraid that you will lose money.

10. You Ignore Your Finances: You take the attitude that if you make enough, the finances will take care of themselves. If you currently have debt, it will somehow resolve itself in the future. Unfortunately, it takes planning to become wealthy. It doesn't magically happen to the vast majority of people.

In reality, it is probably not just one of the above bad habits that has kept you from becoming a millionaire, but a combination of a few of them. Take a hard look at the list, and do some reflecting. If you want to be a millionaire, it's well within your power, but you'll have to face the issues that are currently keeping you from creating that wealth before you will have a chance to call yourself one.

What is Online Networking Really all about?

From time to time I get emails from other Black Entrepreneurs who are interested in networking. Usually we talk abit, exchange links and then the connection fizzles, which is very disappointing. In an effort to build stronger networks online, I decided to sit myself down and really think about what it really means to network online? I came up with the following ideas, tell me what you think.

Networking Online Can Be Achieved in the following ways for various reasons:

1. Meeting New People (by joining newsgroups, forums, or eCommunities)
2. Exchanging Event Invitations (via groups or email)
3. Sharing Ideas and Information (via blogs, groups, or business communities)
4. Self Promotion (through advertising, link exchanges, or article submissions)
5. Generating Icome (by successfully bringing in new clients or through affiliate programs)

I really want to work on developing this concept of online Networking as it makes no sense to meet new people if you have no idea what to say or how to effectively network with them. Let me know what networking techniques work for you...
